In a world that seems made for the hearing, how does a Deaf person find their groove in the fitness scene? The answer, for me, was in the power of the Silent Playlist – an internal soundtrack that energized me through challenges and helped me grow in ways I never thought possible.
And I’ve figured out how you can access this secret weapon too!
When I first started working out, I quickly learned the typical gym experience wasn't designed for people like me. Music blasted from every corner, with AirPods and beats headphones decorating the ears of nearly every gym-goer. Fitness classes didn't energize me either; I just saw instructors with their mouths wide open all the time, their words lost on my Deaf ears. The vibrations of machines and music buzzed through the floor.
For a physical activity, it was really auditory-heavy.
But here's the thing: It never bothered me that I didn't have this "ear juice" everyone else seemed to rely on. I found my own way.
Whether I was visualizing myself conquering the pull-up bar, spelling out words to push through a fiery round of snatches, or getting lost in the sensations of the kettlebell against my skin, there was always an unspoken energy firing me forward.
These silent playlists became my secret weapon, fueling my training for lifting competitions and my epic journey on American Ninja Warrior in 2018. Whenever I stepped into any gym, I transformed into a force to be reckoned with – laser-focused, anchored to my intentions.
It was through this unique lens of being Deaf that I began to understand the true power of my silent playlists. I realized that I wasn't lacking anything.
But would this method matter to anyone else?
When the pandemic hit and online fitness exploded, I watched as a wave of hearing coaches dominated the space with their words and music playlists. While captions were a step in the right direction, I knew there was a missing piece – a way for anyone, regardless of where they fell on the Deaf-hearing spectrum, to tap into their inner force and build their mind-muscle connection, rather than just going through the motions and trying to "keep up."
So, a year and some ago, I started sharing bits and pieces of my Silent Playlist Method – from the mantras that powered my mobility flows to the words that made every rep a "hell yes!"
I jokingly (kinda) called it a silent workout or playlist.
Then something cool happened: It resonated with so many of you!
I've shared this method with my personal training clients, helping them master techniques, rediscover play, and find the motivation to finish workouts with an extra kick. My clients were feeling the effects too.
Deep down, I always knew there was something special about this method but I still wasn’t really speaking up about it. Now, with 9 years of coaching and 12 years of dedicated training under my belt, I'm finally convinced: The Silent Playlist Method is real. And it's a game-changer.
It wasn't until my biz coach, Greg, gave me the final push I needed this year to share more. I was trying to think of ways to level up my offerings (and the last thing I wanted was to write another six-week program to add to the internet), but he saw the potential in my lil silent playlists. He nudged me to stop squashing it and bring it to life.
This "little thing" has been my anchor through it all – not just in fitness, but in life. It's been there during the 12-hour days at Equinox when I first became a trainer, through heartache, the early days of sobriety, and the entrepreneurship rollercoaster.
When I have "d*ckbrain" (a term I learned from my biz mastermind that nicely explains when you're struggling to believe in yourself 🤣), my Silent Playlists keep me grounded. Some days, it's about a bigger purpose – helping you. Other days, it's just for me to get better at a pistol squat, or to meditate, stuff like that.
Whatever the case, the beat plays on.
So I did my best and brought this unspoken force into a concrete guide, featuring four foundational playlists (each one has a video!):
Spell Your Way
Move x Affirm
Visceral Beats
Body Scans 2.0
Whether you're looking to boost your performance, deepen your mind-muscle connection, find calm through meditation, or get hyped without the need for external music, the Silent Playlist Method is your new sidekick.
It's not just for Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals – it's for anyone who craves meaning, presence, and accountability in their fitness journey. And if you’re an instructor, think of this as one of your many tools to give your clients what they need.
Imagine turning down the volume of the outside world and tuning into the rhythm of your own body. The pulses in your veins! ⚡️ The sparks of your muscles contracting. The beat of your own potential coming from within.
Your Silent Roar is that unspoken energy that drowns out self-doubt and propels you forward.
Snag this, like now, and explore the four foundational playlists. It’s a practice.
Get that first rep you’ve been after, master that new exercise, or finally find purpose and peace in your habits.
